Reliable sustainability criteria for the areas of environmental, social and governance (ESG) are becoming increasingly important for companies. This is not only due to new regulatory requirements, such as the EU Taxonomy or the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), but above all to the increased demands of various stakeholders, who expect transparency.
Eintracht Frankfurt have recognised this relevance. In order to be able to evaluate the sustainability of the club’s business activities, an independent ESG tool and rating system tailored to the sports and entertainment industry was developed at the beginning of 2021. Along the known ESG dimensions (Environment, Social, Governance), 25 fields of action are examined. The insights gained from the data collected help to optimise corporate activities and measure progress.
CORNERSTONES AND OBJECTIVES OF THE APPROACH
Systematization & transparency
An ESG tool specially developed for this purpose ensures the digital collection and evaluation of all sustainability data on the basis of robust criteria. This is a specific rating system that was tailored for the sports and entertainment industry.
Evaluation & comparability
This rating system is based on more than 300 sustainability criteria, which are checked by an external partner in the course of the rating process and are based on globally established sustainability standards. This not only takes into account the DFL's sustainability directive, which will be mandatory from 2023, but the scope of the defined criteria goes well beyond the DFL's minimum standard, thus creating a high degree of transparency.
Progress & development
Eintracht Frankfurt are already using the tool to identify where action is needed across all areas and define concrete measures for improvement, and would like to make these available transparently in the future.
We are convinced that our innovative, data-driven approach is crucial to the successful implementation of our sustainability strategy.
Axel Hellmann, CEO
CEO Axel Hellmann says: "We're convinced that our innovative, data-driven approach is crucial to the successful implementation of our sustainability strategy. Involving all departments was one of the fundamental goals from the very beginning. Together with DeKoBe ESG and ESG Book, we were able to fully implement this and put the topic of ESG on a new footing."
